What is a custom spray tan?

A custom spray tan is a consultative one-on-one process with a qualified tan technician. Each tan is personalized according to one’s unique skin tone and preferences.  The technician uses a specialized spray applicator, which evenly coats the sunless solution to the body.

By allowing a professional to apply the spray solution you can ensure a flawless even application, especially on hard to reach areas such as the back.   A spray tan sessions including drying time usually takes 10-15 minutes and results can be expected to last 7 – 10 days

Spray Tan Recommendations

In order to achieve the best tan possible we recommend taking the following steps:

Prior to a tan

One should exfoliate paying special attention to dry areas especially knees and elbows, all hair removal should take place at least at least a few hours in advance. Skin should be clean and free of any make up, moisturizers and deodorant.

After Application

Please remember to bring dark loose fitting clothes for after your tan. It is recommended not showering for a prescribed amount of time after the spray tan is applied this generally ranges from 1 – 8 hours  (you should ask your tan technician if unsure)

In terms of tan preservation we advise avoiding beach sand, swimming in chlorinated water, hot baths with harsh soaps or other activities that cause skin exfoliation. Moisturizing is crucial to maintaining the longevity of your tan.

The science behind a spray tan

browning-apple

Tanning 101: Be Bronzed, Be Brainy…

The composition of Spray Tan Formula

The main ingredient found in all formulas is dihydroxyacetone or DHA for short.

The Process

The DHA bonds to the upper layer of skin creating a brown colour. It is important to note DHA does not increase or alter melanin levels. The brown colouring is a reaction between DHA, oxygen and skin proteins. The chemical reaction is very similar in nature to the browning process a sliced apple browns undergoes after being exposed to the air. The concentration of DHA within a spray tan formula typically determines the colour intensity. When skin sheds its dead cells, the tan fades naturally. Typically lasts 7 – 10 days depending on the individual’s skin exfoliation cycle and tan maintenance routine (this will be discussed in length in a future article).

Worth noting

DHA is actually a transparent when in it’s raw form. Bronzer is added to spray tan formula in order to assist the tan technician to know exactly which areas have been covered and quantity when applying a tan. The bronzer does not remain on the skin and can be seen running off during your first shower. One should only shower after the prescribed amount of time to ensure the chemical bond of the formula has enough time to take place. Depending on the formula used and it’s DHA content this is typically some where between one and eight hours.

Safety concerns

Various studies have indicated that the skin becomes more susceptible to UV rays for the first few days after application. Most spray tan formulas do not contain any UV or sun protection properties, necessary precautions are advised whenever exposing yourself to these elements. We always recommend using a high range sunscreen to protect yourself especially if you are going to be out in the sun.
